Hi All
we have all put memories of the area and the people, but what about the prefabs themselves?
I would willing pay £120k for one now. I think they were well ahead of their time in concept and design. 2 bedroom detached, with large garden and if you were lucky enough to have a corner plot well the garden was huge. We used to grow all our own vegetables, potatoes, beetroot, carrots and the best of all Sprouts......oh how we enjoyed the harvest. But the Prefabs, fitted kitchen with cooker, large copper boiler brilliantly hidden under a worktop, sink and drainer floor to ceiling broom cupboard. Room in the kitchen for a table and chairs. I can't remember if there was a fridge. Large Living room with room for 3 piece suite table & chairs, but no Plasma telly I am afraid. Great fitted bathroom with sink in vanity unit loo & bath and huge airing cupboard. Back bedroom with full wall of fitted cupboards and drawers. O.K. so they were all metal and there was no central heating, but we did have hot running water! Oh and that lovely little black fireplace in the Living room with the cute glass doors, always burnt my fingers on the little latch at the bottom. And what about the ' washing machine man' does anyone remember him? He used to bring the hotpoint machine to the house and it was 2shillings and sixpence for an hour. Oh the joy of having a wringer (it folded down inside the machine) And then we progressed to the twin tub, that new invention the spin dryer! EJJDP you mentioned not many cars and we didn't expect things to change, I also don't think many people had cameras in those days. They were viewed as a luxury item. My dad had one but that was because he was in the navy and bought it in Japan. But it wasn't used for frivolous things like photos of where we lived or family. It was used to take pictures of Venice and Flying Fish and Dolphins in the oceans of the worlds. Oh those were the days!
