I'm amazed, and indeed honoured, to be the first to post!
I was born at Sefton General Hospital on 20/4/1956, and my parents lived at 8 Gateacre Brow. My father (Rev Stanley Butler) was minister of Gateacre Chapel from 1955-1961, when we moved to Wilmslow. Does anyone remember him?
I have fond and vivid memories of the village, and the chapel. I could go on for hours! i can remember walking with my dad to a block of garages in Sandfield Rd (we didn't have one at no.8) to fetch the car (an Austin A30)
I remember Mr Prendegast the chemist, Mr and Mrs Daily the newsagents between our house and The Bear And Staff, the grocer (whose name I've forgotten) on the right further down from the Chapel, "The Girls" as my parents called them at the Post Office, Mr Hesketh the builder/odd job man; and then there was a dubious character with a double-barrelled surname who ran an "unofficial" scout troup...I could go on..
Do please get this forum going!!
Andrew Butler

I used to live in Woolton when I was little, I remember before they built the houses on the old 'raspberry field' by Woolton CP school, you could see over from my nan's house into Orient Drive, and Halewood Road. I remember the building starting on Cherry Vale (we now live there!) I don't remember much about Gateacre village, unforetunately, but loads about Woolton village...there was a funny old character who used to run a kids club in St Peters Church hall in the late '60's early 70's...wonder if he is the same dubious character that you remember? Jane

Hello Chapelstead I hope it's not too late for you to get this message. I didn't actually know your father myself, having only been born in 1955, but I do remember my nan talking about Rev Butler. My family were members of Gateacre Chapel and my great aunt Doris Wyke lived in Dale Cottage at the back of the chapel. My nan was May Wyke and my grandad was Bill Wyke (one of Doris's brothers). My mum was Dilys. I don't know if you will remember any of them, but I thought Doris's name might ring a bell for you. Lynda

I used to live in the prefabs in Lineside Road, but I went to school by Bishop Eaton Monastry so I caught the bus to and from school. I remember walking up and down Gateacre Brow to the bus stop and envied those who lived in the 'big' houses on the brow. I had forgotten Mr Prendergast so this has brought back real long a go memories. My mum met John Gregson, the famous actor of the 50's, in the pub but I can't remember if it was the Brown Cow or the Black bull. Anyone remeber Mr Shawcross the shoe repairer? I went to school with his daughter Mary.
