I remember getting my Raleigh Robin Hood Bike from Bridges Cycle Shop at Childwall Fiveways. It was a fine bike with drop handle bars and sturmey archer gears. Anyway like most lads in the 1950's I was out and about on the bike. One day I was just passing the Gorsey Cop and on the left I saw a sandy track going down towards the Cheshire Lines Railway line and possibly a Farm . So being daft I decided to see how far I could get down the rutted track. I sprinted off . I was doing well dodging the ruts and enjoying the summers day feeling on top of the world on my new sparkling racing bike . Half way down the lane the Bike came to a sudden stop in the soft sand . The only problem was I carried on going and landed in a ditch that skirted the sandy track . Worse was to come as I found to my horror the ditch was full of nettles. The one thing you find out in the country is were there are nettles there are dock leaves and did I need them, as I was stunk all over . I, in my later travels never went down the sandy track again. The experience was to painful.
