Hello , I am trying to research my family who in the 1911 Census lived in Sandfield Road Gateacre But in the Census along side Sandfield road it says Sandhole . I looked up the National Archives census of street names in 1851 and it listed Sandhole in Little Woolton but there was no mention of Sandfield Road . Was Sandhole the original name for Sandfield Road .
Geoff.

Hi Geoff, Sandfield road led to Coxhead/Cockshead farm, and went between Grange lane and eventually Wambo Lane. The name has been changed now, (cannot remember new name) it was just a sand lane, very rough, with hedgerows along each side, from what I can gather, it was perhaps not its real name, but I,m not sure of my facts here.Sandhole is a new name to me, but I will ask my Father who may remember the name. Regards Tom

Hello Geoff, Sandfield Road is the road leading off Gateacre Brow with Gateacre Chapel on one corner and the old telephone exchange on the other corner. In Sandfield Road is a builders merchants which has been there for many years under various names and owners but originally it was a sand pit from which building sand was taken hence the old name "sandhole" Do you know what house number your family lived in? In 1911 there would be nay houses in Sandfield as most where built after that date.
