Remember calling at the the school before it was converted to Flats. And in I think the school hall was a Roll of Honour Board for those that had passed examinations and had gone on to a higher education. Is the Roll of Honour Board still there or been kept by the Gateacre Society . Does anyone Know?

Do I remember rightly that there was a Miss Smyth who was head in the 50s/60s - or was it another local school?

I attendead Gateacre CofE between 1965 and 1971 and the only head I can remember was Mr Lunt, Deputy Head Mrs Bloor. Only had 4 classrooms. Other teachers I can remember was a Mrs Stewart who's daughter attended the same school.

I went in 76 and Mr Lunt was there then, just. Mr Duncan took over after him. My first teacher was Miss Jones and she left early on aswell.

I started Gateacre C of E in 1950 I think the teachers were Miss Rose, Miss Jackson and Mr Ashton Mrs Bennet who lived next door to the school looked after us at lunch and escorted us around to Sandifield Road to the Methodist church hall for dinner. on nice days we may then go to the cricket field. We had coal fires in the class rooms and our milk would be put around the hearth to warm. There was a play room off the infants class room with a dressing up box. As we got older we went on lots of nature walks and listened to some lessons on the wireless. We also did country dancing. P.E equipment was a few bean bags and hoops. It was a very old fashioned School but I think I casn speak for all who were there in my time, we loved it.

i started at gateacre school in 1953, mr ashton was just leaving and mr lunt just arrived, he was always shouting at me,miss jackson was still there ,nearing retirement, she was a sweet old lady very patient and kind, later on came mrs brailey, she was young and full of fun, and we also had a .miss allison, who used to play pop music for us, she got married and became mrs heaton, she left shortly after and had a baby girl.i always remember the bottles of milk were always iced up in the winter, and tasted sour in the summer.the boys were seperated from the girls at playtime, and i can recall mr lunt caning a few of the lads, i think one was called trevor johnson, he used to get picked on, all in all it was a nice little school, happy memories? yeah,

Hi Everyone
I started at Gateacre School in 1954 when I was seven and Mr Lunt was the headmaster. I also remember Trevor Johnson and many others of that time such as Esther Blackstone, Lynne Jones, Brenda Roberts?, Margaret Foster, Graham Redfearn, Peter Bushell, Billy Oates, Colin Lancaster, Ann Talavera, Hilary Jackson, Jimmy Windberg, Jennifer Moore, Georgina Grenfell, Sydney Faulkener etc. Does anyone remember dancing the maypole at the village fetes held in Belle Vale School? We were in the Fete procession on the back of a decorated coal lorry – Health & Safety would have a fit today! I have a picture of that lorry and all the dancers with Mr Lunt, waiting in the school yard before setting off.
I enjoyed my time at the school apart from hating school dinners in the dinner centre in Sandfield Road so my mum eventually let me go home for lunch.
Perhaps we all know each other?

You must be a couple of years younger than me as I remember the brothers and Sisters of several people you mentioned. Carol Jones, Sandra Lancaster, David Talavera, Mary Winberg and Ann Falkner. would love to see your maypole photo if you can post it.

Hi Jackanory Yes, I am Sandra (Jones) and I lived, firstly as you say in Gorsey Cop farm and after that in Hollytree Road not Halewood Close. I would have had a party for my birthday and my mum would have baked everything - glad you enjoyed it Your dad must have been the butcher? I remember his corner shop well. Ann lived round the corner in the cottages on Belle Vale Road I think. Are you in contact with any of our other classmates? By the way we did not have an open topped tourer - not sure where you got that from - must be someone else. Dad went to work on a bike! Cheers for now and do keep in touch.

Hi Sandra, I,m not sure if you remember a girl call June who went to the COMP. I know also a girl called Hilary who lived in the cottages next door to the butcher. She had a friend who lived in Hollytree Road. It,s so long ago but at the back of my mind I think we went around together for a while when we were in are teenies. I,ve been living abroad for the past 40 years (Switzerland) which makes it even more difficult to remember. ((
