In the hope that it might stir memories, I have mentioned in various threads that my late father, the Rev Stanley Butler, was Minister of Gateacre Chapel from 1955-61, but to no avail, so I thought I would try a dedicated thread! I doubt anyone would remember me - I was only 5 when we left for Wilmslow in 1961, but does anyone remember my father, or mother (Mabel Butler) or my maternal grandmother(Ethel Ellis) ? my parents knew the Davenports well, and I remember Mr Prendegast the chemist, the Post Office and Winnie McAndrew, Daily's newsagent - next door to No 8 Gateacre Brow where we lived, etc.... Would be lovely to hear any memories of the chapel, Sundat school, Rose Queen Festivals etc...................

Hello Andrew - what do you know or remember anything about the Chapel. By the way it is still being used today - and was first built in 1700. I think there is a web-site for you to look at. I presume number 8 Gateacre Brow was one of the cottages between the Chapel and Halewood Road, and would be opposite the Black Bull and the Post Office, andd the Chemist shop. Am I correct. Joan

Hello Joan. 8 Gateacre Brow was (?is!) up from the chapel on the left hand side just beyond what used to be Daily's newsagents. Red sandstone with black and white bays at the front.... I don't know more about the history of the chapel than is available locally, but I have many vivid and fond memories of it. The organists were Miss Lillian Houghton and a Mrs Hughes. Some church members' surnames I remember include; Heywood, Potter, Kernot, Shepherd, Green, Kenworthy.... There was a scout master called Haig or Hague...... must close for now.....

I remember Gateacre Chapel well and most of the names mentioned by Andrew. In 1979 I was married in the chapel by Reverend Daphne Roberts with a reception in the Mansion House Reynolds Park (now replaced by retirement flats). Upto being married I lived for 27 years Sandfield Road. The minister before Daphne Roberts was Eric Phillips and before him I think it was Rev Butler. The dates seem to fit with my memory.

Steve-your chronology of Ministers sounds correct. My dad also had charge at the same time of the Hope Street Unitarian Church in the city (long demolished alas!) I mentioned the name Kenworthy - when I was 4/5 i fancied a girl called May Kenworthy something rotten....she must have been about 15!! Anyone know/remember her?
