Percy Bateson was born, 1867, and was the son Liverpool of a wealthy Cottonbroker. He attended Harrow Public School from where he later attended Edinburgh Uni to read Chemistry. He returned to the family home in Childwall and soon began to play football with Bootle. Percy was unhappy with the state of the game in Liverpool which, he believed, lagged someway behind such places as Birmingham and London so he called to-gether all the public school men of Merseyside and, in 1882, he formed Liverpool Ramblers AFC. This club became the first to represent Liverpool in an FA Cup tie. He also arranged for many famous teams, of the day, to visit Liverpool thus, a last, putting the town on the football map. In 1901 Percy, now married with 3 children, is living at Rosefield Terrace in Gateacre and is the manager of a Soap Works in Widnes. He is now the Treasurer of his football club. Percy Bateson was just 44 years old when he died and was buried in Childwall parish church. His funeral cortage, which brought the village to a halt, consisted of such notable familes as the :Hornbys, Gladstones, Earles (Allerton Tower) and the Baxters (Rainhill Tower.) The CLC ran a special excursion train from Cenral Station to Childwall in order to accommadate the vast crowd who came from the business and commercial communities to pay their last respects to a true son of Liverpool.
