What would Gateacre be like if we did not have The Friends of Gateacre . I will tell you what it would be like. It would be knee high in litter. As regards street cleaning Gateacre comes a poor relation of Woolton Village which has its own street cleaning team. The only time I see the the Council cleaning our road is when a street cleaning vehicle that comes down our road at speed cleans the gutters ( no litter picking takes place) . But the Council is not all to blame . People who are suppose to love this City are the main culprits they just throw their half eaten Take Away's down along with drink cans and anything else they can get rid of. The idea that people could be prosecuted for littering like many Laws in this country seems to have fallen by the wayside . Its Just another sad decline in this once green and pleasant land . I was surprised on Saturday when I saw a group of people in our road actually cleaning up the litter which was pretty bad . Initially I thought it was the Council as we pay quite high Council Tax here for their services. But naturally it wasn't . It was The Friends of Gateacre giving up their spare time to clean up other peoples mess. What would we do without them?
Geoff.

Yes, the Friends of Gateacre do a great job. They organise at least two Clean-up Days each year and also the spring and summer planting in the village. You can read all about them at www.friendsofgateacre.orgBetter still, if you live in Gateacre, come along to one of their meetings which are held at the Institute in Grange Lane (see website for dates). Or to their fundraising Quiz Night on Friday 23rd March 2012.

All streets in Gateacre are meant to be swept regularly. But one problem is - I'm told - that the litter pickers aren't allowed to pick up leaves and the leaf clearers (if they visit at all) aren't allowed to remove any paper/plastic litter. Everyone can help by reporting accumulations of either leaves or litter to the City Council via Liverpool Direct: use the 'Report other issues' form at liverpool.gov.uk/contact-us/liverpool-direct/street-scene-services/

The 'walk way' between Belle Vale Road, and by Morrisons - is not very tidy. Every year we have to ask the Council to clear up the mess. I emailed our MP, and she said she would see what she could do. I walked back to Belle Vale Road yesterday from Morrisons, and it still is quite untidy, with tins, plastic bags, and bottled. I think they have cut down the bushes and tidied that up a bit, but not along the walk-way. Our MP said this would be kept clean and tidy. I remember when one elderly man used to tidy it up with his ' wheely bin' some years ago. I think on the whole Liverpool is not very clean and tidy. When are they going to do something about the 'eye sore' Belle Vale shopping area outside on Childwall Road.. it is a horror Who owns it I wonder....... Joan

A big thank you to Mike Chitty for the newsletter, and his work on it. I hope members have read 'The Gateacre Walks' of 1980s Surely there are some members out there who will know something of the buildings named, and some of the people. It was a good time. We used to go on a Saturday afternoon (not every Saturday)with Janet and Sylvia, and we did learn a lot about our area......Janet was an Architect, but not a working one I think, but she knew when these buildings were built, and who built them, and about some of the people who lived in them. The Gateacre Walks are for everyone to read, and learn about Gateacre.

Hi Mike I think Gateacre Brow should be cleaned from all the leaves both wet and dry. But, of coarse the cars which are parked there don't allow the cleaners to do anything ? I remember many years ago, you had to fill in a questionaire paper about the cleaning of Gateacre and send it to the Council of that era.... It was rather a large document.
