My Grandparents were married at St Michaels Church Pitt Street Liverpool in 1895 . The original church was destroyed in the May Blitz 1941. My grandfather must have applied for a job with the Cheshire lines railway that passed through the south end of the City . And being newly married they moved to Gateacre . What culture shock it must have been from moving from the Mill street area of Toxteth with all the commerce and docks to the village of Gateacre . I am still working on were they originally lived in the village . My father mentioned that my grandfather initially lived at the Station masters house and was employed as a porter . My grandparents were both 18 when they married and it must have been a struggle for them moving to this quiet Lancashire village . I know they eventually moved to number 2 Belle Vale road and them when they started a family they lived up the Sandfield . By then my Grandfather had become a Signalman and worked the Signal box at Gateacre.
It was said that they even lived in a cottage in the Nook .
My father and his brothers and sister all went to the Village Church School as later did my brothers .
My father received a book called ' Self Help ' by Smiles as a gift for attending Sunday school at the Church in Sandfield road . I have since passed this book on to my niece. It was signed by the Minister at the time around 1903.
I was born by Childwall Station in 1942 although it had long since closed. So my knowledge of Gateacre is limited . But still remember memories of my father and mother all those years ago.
