Hello Mike Chitty - I have just seen your note about Bear & Staff and the conservation area. Actually the name should be 'BEAR & RAGGED STAFF' which is named so on early documents.

The bear & Staff is a nice pub, meals are good, and the atmosphere is pleasant, and decor nice and oldy worldy, with its oak beams, a pleasant and nostalgic experience. roll on August to pay a visit.

Hi visited the bear and staff for the first time in 40 years, was pleasantly surprised at the layout. When I last went in there it was quite small with a few tables, looks like the bar is still in the same place. The out building were stables and the bowling green has gone but it is a much better pub.

As a pub I really enjoy the Bear and Staff, I've never eaten there as at least until recently I've coughed just at the prices. But drink prices have always been reasonable.
It must be one of the buildings in Gateacre I don't actually have a historic image of! Never mind
