Hello all, I'm new to this site and I'm really impressed. I work in local Primary schools within the area and at the moment I'm researching the history of Netherley. I wondered if anyone has any photos or memories of the area they'd like to share before it was turned into a housing estate. Many Thanks, Steven.

Hi Steven, Nice to hear from you; sounds like an interesting project. I remember the area in the early 1960's when it was all open country. My mum & I used to enjoy long country strolls, and once you got to the end of Childwall Valley Road and Lee Park, it was fields and brooks all the way, with various farms and the odd house along Netherley Road & Wood Lane. Not much traffic either! Netherley itself was just an old farmhouse converted to a waterworks.
Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of Netherley, but I've got some old '60's snaps which show the wide open country across Fordcombe Road, right on the edge of Lee Park, and also places like the 18th Century Nookfield farmhouse & open country west of Lee Park, and the countryside looking north along Netherley Brook. But nothing nearer than these, I'm afraid. I've also got various maps of the area before Lee Park estate was built,
Regards, Ken

Many thanks Ken for your reply, I liked that memory of walking through a rural Netherley, it's hard to imagine but it's nice nonetheless. I wondered if you can remember Lee Hall, Naylors bridge or even Holt Hall farm. The photo's and maps you have sound brilliant and I would dearly like to see them. Is there any chance that sometime in the future you could possibly e-mail them to me? If so then I'd be truly grateful. Many thanks again! Steven. gordon.s@merseymail.com

Hi Steven, Yes I'll be glad to sort out some pic & maps and e-mail them to you. Lee Hall was demolished before the estate was built, so I never saw it, but Netherley Bridge was just exactly that - a bridge where the road passed over Netherley Brook at the point where Childwall Brook joined it, just past the waterworks. As for Holt Hall Farm, well I didn't realise which one it was; just a group of farm buildings across the fields from Netherley Bridge - details are a little hazy after 40-odd years! Pity I didn't take my old Brownie 127 with me on that trip! It's like trying to describe a different world now,
Regards, Ken

Hi there, I am also very very new to this site. I discovered it during my quest to find 1980's pictures of Netherley I was a child then and it has all changed a lot since then so I would be very appreciative if someone could help find these quite unobtainable pictures. Please help.

Hi L27, The only pics I've got of the Netherley/Lee Park area are from the 1950's & 60's when it was all countryside. But I do have a pic of St.Gregory's School, undated but I would guess around 1980 or so when it was new. The massive high-rise blocks of flats form a stark background to the pic,

Hi Stegordon, I remember Holt Hall Farm, as a kid I went to birthday parties there. I lived at Coxhead Farm and my parents knew the farmer Tom Jackson, he was the brother of Harrison Jackson at Childwall House Farm at the bottom of Well Lane, well known for its' pond. Back to the birthday parties, The Jackson kids were Margery the oldest, next was Billy, then Jean. They moved to Yorkshire when the farm was compulsory purchased. They were all older than me I was born in 1938. Chris Jones. My email is sc0use14@hotmail.com That is a zero not a capital o

Hi Chris, Thanks for the info and for sharing those wonderful memories of farm life; it really was a different world then! By the time we moved to Lee Park at the end of '57, the farms had gone and the Childwall Valley estate was about to be built. It's great to talk to someone who actually lived on one of the lost farms. I think there's at least one pic in the Record Office showing the Besford Road prefabs with a farm (Coxhead?) in the background. Must check it out sometime,
Cheers, Ken

Thanks Ken, I would appreciate it if you could find that pic., I can probably identify the farm. The only pic. I have of Coxhead is a snap taken of a dog by later occupants, I got it from John Williams the author. His aunt was caretaker of the place after we left and it was no longer a working farm. i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/sc0use/alicesfarm.jpgIt shows just the Kitchen end of the house, the house was huge and had about 20 rooms including a cell with bars on the windows in the attic. John wrote a tale about it, I think it is in the book he published a couple of years ago,"Liverpool Tales by the Merseymouth". It is called, "Alice's Farm".

I just checked on the map, that farmhouse was possibly the one in Wambo Lane, it was no longer a working farm. It was called 'Stockleys', next to it stood a row of red brick terraced houses, I can't remember exactly how many, probably 4 or 5. It could possibly be Coxhead depending on which direction it was facing. If you can reference the pic. I will be able to tell. I have found the reference but it won't let me see the pic. 352 ENG/2/11733

Hi Chris, Many thanks for the gen on Coxhead Farm, and the pic. If you look at 352 Eng/2/13179 it mentions a farm behind 109 Besford Rd, so I'll look that up on my next visit to the LRO.
Also there's a part of Coxhead Farm visible in the pic of the Children's playground in Lineside Road; I've got that one, and you've probably seen it too. Now looking at the 1904 OS maps there's Belle Vale Farm & Cottage at the top of Wambo Lane, with just a few terraced houses in a group. Could these be the ones you mentioned?
Regards, Ken

Hi Ken, That is the one I am referring to as Stockleys. Even back then it was not a working farm and I did not know the people who lived there. My dad had a friend who lived in one of those terraced houses. His name was Wilson, he had a son Alan who was a couple of years older than me. I have never seen any other pictures of Coxhead, I would appreciate it if you could email me copies of anything you have. Chris.

Hi, I've lived in Netherley since 1969, and recently found some old ordenance survey maps from 1849 of Tarbock/Little Woolton, Which shows The Brick wall inn etc. Does anyone have any information or maps from before 1849? Or any information about a Netherley Farm. Looking at the 1849 map, it looks like my house could've been very near if not actually on the location of the farm. Thanks Rob

Hi Rob, Nice to hear from you. I have some old maps, old street maps, and pics of the Netherley area. Old Netherley was originally just the farm and the bridge. Even in the early 1960's there was nowt else there, just the waterworks, and a few farm buildings and cottages along Netherley Road & Wood Lane; lots of green fields and not much traffic! According to the old street maps Netherley Farm itself seems to have covered the area around Kenwood Close and Skellington Fold. The early maps don't show any real detail, but the first large scale OS in 1891 shows everything in great detail. There have been a few other people interested in Netherley, so I might try posting some more of my stuff here,
Ken

How serious are you about collecting info?
I maintain some contacts but I live in Montreal Quebec. For example my Dad(90) is still alive as are several other old folks I know
