I hope this can finally end the confusion about the childrens home. If you have been told it was in Gateacre it would have to be the one in Oakfield Avenue . It has since been pulled down and the land re-developed. The land is now an estate called Meadow Oak Drive. I can remember when I was young the children passing down my road ( Beechurst ) on their way to the shops in Belle Vale. The house was a large Victorian sandstone building within its own grounds. They even had their own donkey!
hi are you sandra ryan, do you also remember me susan oldham and my sister merial oldham ?

Hi Robert, The only children's home I know of was "Strawberry Field" (the one made famous by the Beatles) in Beaconsfield Road, Woolton. It was a Salvation Army Orphanage, but it is now closed, and the original Victorian building has been demolished. The present building dates from 1973, and there are still the old entrance gates on the road. This is very close to the Gateacre and Childwall area, perhaps it was the one you're thinking of? Cheers, Ken Are you thinking about In Oakfield Avenue Off Cuckoo Lane.It was a (Victorian house) it was a (Resential Special School)it was Demolished in Late 1980s.That was by (Gateacre Compresensive School). But people think it was a Children’s home.NOT at all. It was A School. Thanks. Christine Harris

Hi have just been going through google and come cross this Oakefield was a school for special needs in 70s early 80s it was some sort of boarding house before then I worked there in the 80s and it was a further education for special needs doing RDA life scold and more I loved working there it was the best time of my life. Mrs Collins was head teacher at that time. It was such a shame when they closed it and knocked it down. I have tried to find information on the building and as the school but not been able to find anything. I have photos of the animals from when I worked there and at one point I was allowed to keep my horse there due to I looked after the animals. At a weekend as well as through the week. If anyone has any photos or knows anything on the history of the house please email me janlakeside@yahoo.co.uk my name then was jeanette Cookson xx

Hi Ken, Thanks for your reply! I can hardly believe it is Strawberry Field because my aunt would've told me I guess. Would be great though if it was part of my childhood! Isn't there a place more close to Netherley that could fit my memories? I remember it wasn't that far from Netherley because we walked back to our old flat in Paveley Bank one time we escaped ;D Anyway again thanks for your reply and I'll check it out next weekend when we're back in L'pool! Grtz Robert

It may be the orphanage/care center situated just off Wambo Lane, near the small shopping area. ( Not far from the jam factory) A sliding gate was locked in the evening, and a large house built in a U shape, had railings around, and children were inside. I cannot remember the name of the house. I am unsure if they were living in a home, permanently, or for day visits only. Unfortunately the people who would know, have past. Most people do not remember it, I played as a kid there in the early fifties.
