Why was the Gateacre Hall Hotel allowed to be demolished as for as i know it was a listed building dating back to the 1700 hundreds. Was the building a house at one time as i was told it was a coaching stop before it became a pub/hotel, can anyone let me know of it`s history. To many interesting buildings are being lost in the area. JIMBO

By way of an aside on this topic.
The Hotel was, if I am correctly informed, owned by an old friend of mine Billy Taylor prior to it's demolition. Billy was the son of the Liverpool Bookie "Bill Taylor of Huyton".
Perhaps out of boredom I entered the word Gateacre in the eBay search window a couple of years ago and discovered that the contents of the hotel were being sold off via eBay and at auction (same thing I suppose).
I recall in my youth the tales about the place and the fact that it, and the adjacent Nook, was haunted.

Hi Jimbo, I believe the Hall was a house as I went to springwood school with a boy and girl who I believe lived there Dave and Rose Alxander this was between 1940 to 47. I can't tell you anything more about them though I would like to know if they are still about, I mainly saw them on the 66 bus to school. Cheer's, Tippo. Thanks Ken, Will look up the sites you have told me about will gat back soon. Allthe best for now, JIMBO.

Hello - Gateacre Hall Hotel is/was the modern name for this building. It was probably called this when it was converted to an hotel. Originally it was I think 'The Nook' the home of the Rev. William Shepherd - Vicar of the Unitarian Chapel in Gateacre for 56 years. Gateacre Hall - built we think in the 18thc and was part of Woolton Hill. It was on Acrefield Road, and if you look up Gateacre Brow it was I think near to where the white house is now. It was a very large mansion. According to an old map of Gateacre c1835 it was occupied by 3 famillies that I know of. Robert Roskell (Watch and Clock maker) John Topham - (Attorney) and John Weston. (Merchant) The last to live there was James Leishman and his family of sisters. He was a Bachelor....... but in 1892 he left Gateacre Hall, and went to live in Devon. I have a full description of the Hall - when the whole was 'For Sale by Auction' 14 October 1892 and it was named as such. I believe it was demolished in about 1910-20 I am trying to find a picture/photograph of it. If anyone knows of such I wouldbe pleased to hear. The above information has been found on newspaper archive, and the Bennisons map of Gateacre - 1835......which shows clearly who had lived there. More information can be found on the Gateacre Society web-site - 'Gateacre Walks' Woolton Hill - researched by Janet Gnosspelius/Sylvia Lewis Janet thought Gateacre Hall dated about 1760 - Joan Borrowscale - 'Gateacre Society
