Hi all, Did not think much of this at the time as I was only a kid growing up in Belfort road, Gateacre.Having viewed the 1945 RAF picture Ken posted,I now have sympathy with some of our neighbours. They had moved to the new properties of Belle Vue and belfort(which were built in 1936)to retire to the country with a rail link connecting them to Liverpool. There rural heaven was then developed,Lee park, netherley,The Nook and on top of this the railway closed. These people had ploughed their saving into their dream homes and retirement future to see it not go to plan.Never mind it happens.

Well, first of all, hello to everyone. My memories of Gateacre go back to 1958, when I went to live weekdays at my auntie's prefab in Hedgefield Road. It was a 'palace'!!! It smelled of furniture polish and I remember that the walls were painted with 'jasmine' coloured paint. My aunt and uncle's names were Elsie and Joe Carlin. They had no children and Joe was a gardener at the catholic church nearby. My mother was very ill, later died, at the time and she looked after me and my sister during the week. We were sent to Joseph William's school and I remember one teacher called Mr Owen. I realise now that this man was a child molester, but at the time, being 8 years old and just liking the fact that he gave me a 'Nuttall's Mintoe' for being a 'good girl' - does anyone remember this man - he was probably 40ish and bald headed? Apart from this, I loved being in Gateacre. The family next door were the Lee's and there were a lot of children in the family, I remember. I remember Mr Lee made us all 'fancy' chips with the 'other end of the potato peeler' - I wrote this in a letter to my mother, in hospital. I still have the letter! I also remember a boy named Vivien lived a few doors away, only because it was such an unusual name. Colin Bell was one of the boys in my class at the time, but other names are hazy. I eventually came to live in Cloverdale Road with my father, brother and sister. My father cycled to work every day in the Bluecap Food Factory in Wambo Lane and my sister and I fended for ourselves most of the time. We both went on to Gateacre comp. I just remembered a girl called Shirley Thickbroom (strange name!!!) who was in my class at Joseph Williams at one time. Another name that springs to mind is John Richardson. I remember having a 'fight' with this poor lad and hitting him with my satchel!!! Sorry John! I cannot for the life of me think how this came about because I am a gentle person and I think he was. I remember that he had no mother either. I have memories of the comp and Cloverdale Road, some not too nice but others nice to think about. The teacher that I liked best at the comp was Miss Bennet-Jones. She was the housecraft teacher and was always very kind to me. Also Mr Horrocks and Mr Davies, who was my form teacher at one time. Then there was Mr Ives, who was responsible for pulling my hair so hard that it came out - hmmmmmm - this would not happen today!!! Anne Carmichael was my friend in the comp and I thought she was 'the bee's knees' hahaha - such memories!!! I will be thinking about this time in my life now and will probably think of lots of other things/names etc. I have so enjoyed reading people's input. Take care everyone and I will check the site out soon - Ellie (Was Elsie Reeve)

Mr. Ainsworth, I remember him , he was a ROYAL JERK ! Probably taught boys gym . I was no more than 10 years old and STILL remember his name... He was a sadistic grumpy old man, and cained me often. (half the time for probably very little cause) .. Today he would be guilty of child abuse!

Hello everyone. My name is Steve Owens. we lived on the corner of Ringway Road and Fordcombe Road. I had an older brother Tommy and an older sister Freda. We moved there in the late 50ies and i was born there in 1960. We all went to OLA and our neighbours were the Hamels, Simcocks, The Taylors ( moved to Cornwall )Len & Edey Wilkenson and son John ( who went to Gateacre Comp )Ingrid..?? I remember playing in the sandpits were the Eden Flat was built. Then we use to play in the sqaure in front of Eden. Our friends were Tom & Arthur Smith , Tony & Andy Foster, Paul Nolan,Sandra Codey, Carl Hamel,Mick & Steve Knott. We moved to Beechill Close in 1971. We lived next to the Cummins ( Lyn was in my class at OLA ). There were the Fitz's who had a big white bull dog called Bengo, the Welshes, Cathy Scott, Chadwicks, Lorraine Evans, The Youngs ( Maureen and Susan ), The Churchs ( Darrel and Paula ). I went around with Roy Holmes amd Malcom Lee who lived in Macmillan aswell. We had great days playing in the Nook, and footy on the golf course....getting chased off aswell. We use to go across the golfy to the fields near the sewers, looking for birds eggs. Also playing football in the square and riding around on the bikes and getting cahsed by Billy the caretaker. I remember Kev East but you moved away when i was young. I remember the blue van that use to come around and kids bought loosey cigarettes ( i think our neighbours Dad , Ken worked on it ). Also the Alpine Man.....Once an armoured car appreared outside the flats... And Albert Nelson jumped on the back and fell off when it was doing about 30 mph down Ringway Road........i could go on about things that happened.....There was also a Family called the Thickbrooms ( Sue and Shirley...and about 5 more ) but they emigrated to Australia. I also had a mate Mark Wigglesworth who lived on Lee Vale Road. I remember on bommy night having a big bonfire on the grass on Fordcombe Road. There were so many families and kids in Lee park then. The Rimmers ( Lucille, Angela, Paul ). Does anyone remember Mrs West , The dentist on Churchfield. There use to be a youth club at St.Stephens that my brother went to.

Hi everyone. I have read through all that has been written about memories of Gateacre, it brought so many memories of my own growing up there, I first lived in Endbrooke Road until I moved to Fordcombe Road Lee Park in the early 60's, Growing up in the pre fabs was great, even comming from a big family(6 sisters & 1 big brother) we were surrounded by plenty of mates our house was always full of people. My sisters and I all went to Joseph Williams C.P. Mrs Davis was a favorite teacher of mine My best freind was called Geraldine and some of the families around us were called Rimmer, Bell, Evans, Woodall, Farrell, Rowe,& Gwilt-Stanner was by brothers mate, I loved bonfire night, roasting spuds on the 'bommy' swinging 'winter warmers' around and collecting stuff to burn for weeks before from our neighbours. We played in Pricketts field, hung out at the Bridge Inn and walked for miles down Wood lane and Naylors Rd. We played on the playing field oppersite the fire/police station (I remember the shops being knocked down for them to be built) does anyone remember the Caretaker who used to lock the gates to the playingfield- we used to call him Billy Tinwhistle'. The Labour Club and the park ajacent to it were there was tennis courts and a bowling green, and gypsies use to camp there every year, getting the 66 bus from the terminus in Lee Park to go to Woolton Baths.....sorry I am rambling now so many memories have surfaced...I'll finish for now thanks for sharing yours.. I may write more later . regards Jean

Hello Everone .. I have found this site quite by accident looking for information about Gateacre Comp .. I started reading over 2 hours ago and have to stop and join as my eyes are hurting reading on my phone .. at first I thought it was an old site as the dates were around 2007 and now realise it is still going .. Ken appears to be the lynch pin well done Ken what an amazing place to chat .. I am sure I know loads of you on here .. I went to Craighurst in 1961 and Gateacre Comp in 1966 .. the best news I can tell you all is that on 26th November 2016 @ 7.30 in Woolton Village Club (the old British Legion) there will be a Gateacre Comp Reunion taking place .. there is a disco and a buffet and we are trying to get in touch with as many people / pupils / teachers as possible to make this a worthwhile and memorable event .. we have to cover the cost of the disco and food and we will be charging £10 per head .. my name is Norma Aspinall I have 3 brothers Philip Steven and Peter and 1 sister Diane .. my 3 brothers went to Craighurst and The Comp too my sister went to Childwall Valley .. there are about 30 of us ex pupils going to the "school disco" on 26 th November so far .. a few names you might know Robert Gregson Ian Heavyside Janet Magill Ann Arnold Ray Turner Allan Roberts Susan Halligan Mike Webb Ronnie Williams Alan McKenzie Ellen Lund William Butterworth Denise Ashworth Carol Power and many more .. I do hope you can help me spread the word .. but reading all your messages I get the feeling it would be good to catch up and share stories face to face .. I am currently looking for low cost places to stay local to Woolton for the long distance travellers and will pop back on with more information over the next few days .. Thank You all for the lovely stories .. so many more ...

Prefab numbers on the right Hi Jonesy, only just joined site after spotting comments about the prefabs on Endbrook Rd - my grandparents are on your list of residents from 1948/49 - Nelly and Thomas ( though he always used middle name Jim) Neilson at number 40.They were there until they moved to high rise block at Hartsbourne Heights late 60s/1970.Their 2 sons Ken ( my dad ) and Norman would have been mid teens and his brother Norman 10 at time of your list. I was born mid 60' so only have few memories of going to visit grandparents in the prefab.Great to see photos of the houses .
