HI there - This is a really interesting group. I have never been to Gateacre and area, but my grandmother was born there. Her father lived at 18 Gateacre Brow and worked at Throstle Nest Farm according to the 1901 census and she told me she lived in one of the Pinfold cottages on BelleVale Rd. Are the Pinfold cottages the same as Gateacre Brow? Does anyone have any knowledge of these places or perhaps a photo. I do not know when they were demolished. The family name was Hulme by the way. Any help would be fantastic. I live in Canada now and can't get there easily.
Carol

Hi Carol, Nice to hear from you, have you seen the message about the Hulme family by "hulmegrandson" on the general Board? Regarding Pinfold Cottages, I can't recall that name just now, but Belle Vale Road is a continuation of Gateacre Brow and runs right through Gateacre village. The only old cottages I know about on Belle Vale Road are Stone Cottages and Church Cottages, and they are all still there. Pics on Gateacre Society and elsewhere on the web. I know that Church Cottages were also known as Walker's Cottages and Model Cottages, and I might be missing something, so I'll have to see if Pinfold Cottages turns up anywhere. I'll let you know,
Ken

hi carol/ ken. Firstly i think me and Carol might be related because in the 1901 census my great grandfather was head of the household and my grandad was born at 18 Gateacre Brow they where both named Charles Arthur Hulme.I'am currently building a family tree for the Hulme Family, there are still four people from Gateacre still alive who i'am in contact with, because of the amount of information i am likely to get it will take me a long time to sort it. I also have photograph's of Throstle Nest Farm. Reference Pinfold Cottages the answer might be on British History Online, if you go to maps then search Gateacre look north of Throstle Nest you will see Pinfold [ Houses ] near Naylor's Bridge. All for now. Hulmegrandson

I remember Grant McCullough - we went on the coach to Wembley to watch the game - Mr. (Eddy) Edwards arranged it - and the games on the "cricky" as I remember we called it - my mate Fred Witter moved from the prefabs to the new flats overlooking the far end of the "cricky" off the Nook - great days.

Hi, Folks: I just came across this really useful and interesting Wiki page on Gateacre, complete with some superb colour photos of local places of interest. It can be found at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GateacrePacked with info, and well worth a visit! [We've temporarily borrowed your Katie and William as I write this; they are currently touring Canada and are receiving a rapturous and tumultuous welcome everywhere they go. They may not decide to return - they wouldn't be the first Brits to see this great country and promptly decide to emigrate ! But thanks for loaning them to us - they're a little taste of "over 'ome" for those of us who left long ago!]

Hi,all moved to belfort road in 1956,as with belle vue road both were cul-de-sacs with a large block wall separating us from the prefabs.I remember mrs Guys shop between the railway and the garage.A chap called Paddy worked at the garage, were I was sent for parrafin for our heater. The old post office joined to Pendergasts chemist with Brooks and the prudential office over the road, lovely black and white timbered buildings. The cricket field and bowling green which backed onto allotments which became thornside housing estate.Pity the railway station never re-opened as it was planned to the southern terminus of the new merseyrail system, buy -for -now.

1956 - The year I was born! I have asked before, bur not even had a NEGATIVE response, so here goes again! Does anyone on here remember my dad, the Rev Stanley Butler who was minister of Gateacre Chapel? Also, although I remember many of the shopkeepers (eg Mr Prendergast, Winnie McAndrew, Daily's newsagents, etc, I cannot remember the name of the Grocer. He was bald, and my elder brother called him "Skating Rink For Flies" !

Hi, Why was the Gateacre hall Hotel demolished? I once heard a story from a chap in the Nook bar about slaves being shackled up outside the hall whilst their master's took refreshment.Confession time; I was an under age drinker when I was told the story, also I took the canvas awning off the Co-op just before it was demolished and used it to cover my motorbike and the cable which operated the signal on the railway, after the line had closed,it made a great washing line.Feel better now hardly crimes of the century.Could Gateacre station still be there,I remember entering the station and most of it was within the embankment,is it entombed? does any-one know.

I have asked before, bur not even had a NEGATIVE response, so here goes again! Does anyone on here remember my dad, the Rev Stanley Butler who was minister of Gateacre Chapel? Hi Andrew. Neil McKenzie who wrote this below, remembered your dad. "Working my way through the book has brought back some personal memories. The Chapel is somewhere I recall fondly, and the youth club that used to be held in the hall in Sandfield Road. My brother and I used to ring the bell in the Chapel for Sunday service, and I was confirmed into the Chapel around 1962-64. With living in Sandfield Road I remember Doris Wyke quite clearly, and two of the ministers that were there, Stanley Butler and Eric Phillips. On page 83, the lower picture of the School mentions a Tom Radley. This could be my Uncle Tom. Seeing Morphet’s butcher’s shop brought back memories of my Dad. He was Alec McKenzie and was a shop manager for them for many years." All for now Hulmegrandson
