I do not understand it either. Why do people not fight to retain buildings like this in the area? When they are gone (forever) Gateacre will become just like every other place. Go to the Cotswolds, places like Rye, Chester or York and they are not knocking down old landmark buildings and putting up uninteresting glass and concrete structures. Character boosts an area's popularity and value.
I remember growing up in Woolton in the 1960's and it felt somewhat rural. I really loved it. Land gets sold to developers and up go the houses. (It's apparently going to happen on the present site of Gateacre Comprehensive) We need to take responsibility for the future of this area and preserve green space and old buildings with character. I really miss Gateacre Hall/The Nook. How did we let that happen?

Trust me it was opposed in the strongest of terms by local residents, but it managed to "float" through the council planning permission stages......if only I were a builder and had the kind of contacts / clout they obviously have....
I have checked and there are preservation orders on all the trees fronting the property, however I wouldn't be surprised if the builders made a tragic "error" and accidentally chopped down a few trees during construction.
I should finish now, Im starting to sound bitter and twisted.

Sadly St. Gregorys House is no more - just a load of bricks It did'nt take them long to demolish it. It probably is'nt/was'nt a listed building. Joan
