history of the hulme family in gateacre

Hello everyone this smiley describes how i felt when i found a photo of my great uncle George Hulme standing between the petrol pump's at my grandad's ( Charles Arthur Hulme ) gatsoc.atwebpages.com/history/page13.html garage in Belle Vale Road. My Grandad must have been well known in Gateacre as he owned the garage and car showroom in Belle Vale Road, he also owned a haulage company with about 12 lorry's. Then if you travelled up the road and under the railway bridge he also had a farm called Throstle Nest. My mum told me that my grandads brother George Hulme was the local Milkman as well as delivering the milk he also milked the cow's and washed the bottles.Another brother Harry Hulme was the local coal merchant. He also had two more brother's Jack Hulme and James Hulme the latter i would like to find more information on, last thing we heard was he was living in Garston. When i was 5-7 years old i used to go to my grandad's garage, where i meet a man called Paddy he worked for my grandad, from what i can recall Paddy used to have an Oxford Cambridge, he used let me sit on his knee and steer the car and i was over the moon, maybe that's why i love cars so much now. hello , what i know of the Hulme family is that my gran Ethel Guy lived in THE DAIRY BELLE VALE RD , where i also lived with my mum & dad as a small child.When i was older the orchard of THE DAIRY was taken over by your grandad then mid 1960 when gran died the beautiful old farmhouse was demolished, to make way for your grandad to extend his business.Did you also have a realation who worked in BEAR BRAND IN WOOLTON many years ago ? her surname was Hulme & she lived in Woolton,

Hi hulmegrandson,
I was interested to read your message, as I've been doing some research recently, and just to add to ludlow's message, I found that the Belle Vale Service Station was established in the late '50's next to The Dairy, and after Ethel Guy died in 1965 it looks like your grandad bought up the land, demolished the dairy, and about 1970 built the car showroom on the site.

Throstle Nest is a place that's always fascinated me; it must have been a nice old house as well, and it seems a tragedy that it had to be demolished to make way for the housing estate,

My family lived in Gateacre for generations, around the Gateacre Brow area. I have a photo of some of my family members with a lady that I only know as "Mrs Hulme" that must have been taken around the year 1915. Hi Hulme Family,
The Lady in "Bear Brand" was Miss Rita Hulme Floor
manager of red floor, covering seaming, reefing, inspection,
and auto heeling, plus the batch dept and marval mending. my
wife was an inspector, Rita was a very strict overseer but very
fair with her girls.Rita got married late in life, and I believe she
lived in the new property on the corner of Acrefield and Cookoo
Lane. I'm afraid I dont know her married name.

Rita was the daughter of John Humphrey Hulme and Elizabeth Foster. I don't have any information about Rita, so it was good to hear about her occupation. She had a sister and a brother. John Humphrey was the son of Charles Arthur Hulme and Sarah Young, so "Hulmegrandson" might be interested too. Many thanks

Hi Ludlow, Sorry it's been a long time getting back to you, me and my family have been ill. I have been speaking to my mum she tells me that her dad may have bought the land where the garage was built in late 50's or early 60's because my aunties worked there serving petrol, and my grandad used to just sit inside most of time because he was ill with cancer, he passed away early 1966. My mum used bring bag's full of bread for the duck's or chicken's to Ma Guy's a few time's a week, this was possibly mid 50's. You and Tippo are right it was Rita Hulme my mum's aunt that worked in the BEAR BRAND FACTORY. All for now Hulmegrandson.

hi hulmegrandson, I too remember your grandad, my dad was friends with him, they were brought up in gateacre village, I also remeber your aunties Dorothy, rita and Valerie, they were older than me , but I used to get my petrol there when I passed my test in 1966, it was mostly Valerie that served me, she was very nice. now I am thinking that one of the girls was your mum after reading your last message? Your grandad lived in halewood close , did he also sell coal as well?My dad was Billy Jackson your mum will remember him, all for now,Jackanory.

Hi Jackanory, I phoned my mum as soon as i seen your post. You are right one of the girl's Dorothy is my mum and she remembers your mum & dad working in the Butcher's, she said the building was made of sandstone. Was the shop owned by the Jackson family. My mum said she used to play with one the Jackson girl's who was a bit younger than her at the bottom of Halewood close, she got told off by her dad for giving away a really expensive child's pram, do you remember if that was you. My grandad did sell coal aswell as run the Garage and Throstle Nest Farm. My mum was very pleased to hear about the Jackson family after all these years. All for now. Hulmegrandson. (Mike).

hi Mike, yes It was me that used to used to play with your mum, say hello to her will you,I can,t remember giving away the pram, though it could of been me.Tell your mum that my mum is still living in woolton and she is 96 this year, and has got a great memory, gateacre was a lovely place , sadly it has changed and like everywhere it is very busy with lots of traffic, a far cry from the little village your mum and her family and mine enjoyed all those years ago, tara for now, Jackanory{hilary}

Hiya hulmegrandson. I've been researching my family history and we are very, very distant cousins. Your Hulmes are descended from a Charles and Ann Hulme who lived in Childwall House in Well Lane in the mid 1800s. Charles' brother was Edward and he lived in Gorsey Cop Farm. Charles and Edward were both born in Melling and had a number of siblings who were all farmers including my ancestor Humphrey. Have loads more info if you want to get in touch, but don't know what direction your research taking. Tricia

No have checked this out and it's not there now apparently. There's a photo of it at www.childwall.info

One of the branches of my family were living there in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census so that's how I came across the place. Then found the photo through internet search.

It's also shown on the Roby section of the map on this website
