Could someone help me out please?
Me & my brother have, somewhere in the early seventies, been in a childrens home in Liverpool. I've been living in Holland since 1974 but I'd love to see that place on my next trip back home. My aunt, who lives in Netherton, told me once it was down in Gateacre. I remember it wasn't too far away from Netherley, the place I lived that time with my mum. Could someone tell me if there was a childrens home and where it was in Gateacre?
Thanks a lot!

Hi Robert, The only children's home I know of was "Strawberry Field" (the one made famous by the Beatles) in Beaconsfield Road, Woolton. It was a Salvation Army Orphanage, but it is now closed, and the original Victorian building has been demolished. The present building dates from 1973, and there are still the old entrance gates on the road. This is very close to the Gateacre and Childwall area, perhaps it was the one you're thinking of?
Cheers, Ken

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your reply! I can hardly believe it is Strawberry Field because my aunt would've told me I guess. Would be great though if it was part of my childhood! Isn't there a place more close to Netherley that could fit my memories? I remember it wasn't that far from Netherley because we walked back to our old flat in Paveley Bank one time we escaped ;D Anyway again thanks for your reply and I'll check it out next weekend when we're back in L'pool!
Grtz Robert

Hi Robert, Hope you had a good weekend. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I don't know of any other Children's homes. Perhaps someone else reading this might have some ideas, but on past form I wouldn't hold my breath!
Cheers, Ken

Hi Robert, I hope I can help you, there was a Children’s home on Wood Lane I believe it was part of the land that the Wilson’s owned. That would be the Wilson’s of Starways Airlines or better know for being the owner of the Famous Army store. If I am right this house was Tony Wilson’s home he had two daughters. They the family sold of the land and house and The Netherly Estate was built, that area was know as Gateacre at that time I now live in California so I have not been there latterly and do not know if it is still there. Good luck with you search. Paul Hi Robert, The only children's home I know of was "Strawberry Field" (the one made famous by the Beatles) in Beaconsfield Road, Woolton. I hope this can finally end the confusion about the childrens home. If you have been told it was in Gateacre it would have to be the one in Oakfield Avenue . It has since been pulled down and the land re-developed. The land is now an estate called Meadow Oak Drive.
I can remember when I was young the children passing down my road ( Beechurst ) on their way to the shops in Belle Vale. The house was a large Victorian sandstone building within its own grounds. They even had their own donkey!

Thanks, Sandra. I never thought of Oakfield! even though I walked past it every day at the Comp in the 60's. I always thought of it as a special school. That must be the one; I was way off with Strawberry Field,

I am not terribly sure on this one, but a friend owned the Woolton Rebourne Hotel and I thought that he had mentioned that it had been a chidren's home in the past. It was situated on Acrefield Road between the top of Gateacre Brow and Woolton Village. www.wooltonredbourne.net/

Hi, Delaney;
You're probably thinking of Aymestry Court, which (as John correctly pointed out) is now the Woolton Rebourne Hotel. It was a childrens home for the City of Liverpool for some years, which was later relocated to (or merged with) another childrens home location at Strawberry Fields.
Aymestry Court was built by the patriarch of the Lyle family (it was either Tate or Lyle, of the great Liverpool sugar-processing family, but I'm pretty sure it was the Lyles that built it). I seem to recall hearing that it had been his wedding gift to his daughter. His own very much larger home stood across from it on Acrefield Road, and I believe that became a hospital or nursing home after his death.
Aymestry Court was (still is?) a beautiful place - large manorial house with an enclosed small courtyard and a coach house, a gatehouse, large lawns at the back, and a spectacular view out over the East Lancashire plain.
Hope these memories help. I live in Toronto, Canada, now, but I can still see that beautiful old house in my minds eye as freshly as the days when I saw it often as a young teenager!
Best wishes,
Johnkw
PS - the spelling of the house's name may vary: it may have been 'Aymestrey Court', if this helps your research.

I presume you are talking about 'Salisbury House' which was on Woolton Road now where the Redrow homes now are. It would be pulled down at least 20 ys ago. It was a childrens home - or orphans home ?
