can anyone tell me is the brown cow still open, was round there last week and it looked like it was closed, is this another victim of the pub recession.

I heard that bills weren't being paid, and the landlady left in rather a hurry. There has however been some interest in taking it on as a going concern (if the paper-shop rumour-mill is to be believed!). The new owners will need to completely refurb inside by all accounts though.....

Good luck with the relaunch, Brown Cow! I had my first pint there, half a century ago, with my pal, Stuart, in...well before I was 18, that's for sure. Somewhere around 1961-61.

My grandfather, Thomas Burrows, was born at 12 Gateacre Brow in 1873. Later he lived further down the brae at No. 26, just down from The Bear & Staff, but long demolished. My uncle was taken to see the cottage up an alleyway by his father, Thomas. Thomas's father, also Thomas, had lived in The Brow since at least the 1871 Census and many of my relatives were born there until the lure of the city took them to Wavertree!
