Jacko, you sure about the Greenough's building them? Our deeds show Joshua Lace selling number 8 to John Greenough in 1837...although the Greenough's seem to have a lot to do with them from there until 1851 when John sold it to a Wlliam Lee. I thought the Greenough's owned one of the Woolton quarries...could it be they bought them as an investment or something? Just found this which puts Joshua Lace in Gateacre in 1832... LACE,JOSHUA,ATTORNEY,GATEACRE,LIVERPOOL,S, www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/1832Pollbook/Pollbook1832.htmAlso, (and I've no idea what this is) this seems to put Ambrose Lace in Gateacre in 1870 LACE AMBROSE SOLICITOR GATEACRE LIVERPOOL 1870 www.blacksheepindex.co.uk/BSI-LaLank.pdfIn our deeds, Ambrose is listed as owning 1 Stone Cottages in 1842, mortgaging it to a William Lee in 1951 - no idea why that's on our deeds though!

hello mart, the info ive got is from when my mum was living in belle vale rd, and she was in the original gateacre society, they say in their pamphlet of 1982, that joshua lace sold the land to the greenhoughs to build nos 1and 2, as a family house and venture, and the family built the rest, william lee was a grocer and baker, previously he was a joiner lodging with my gt, gt,grandmother mary jackson, who was widowed, he married her in 1843, and they ., built a successful business, they had ivison villa, and howell villa in halewood road built in about 1870,perhaps the greenhoughs wanted some investment money and ambrose lace bought it off them then william lee mortgaged it to rent out, ambrose lace was joshuas son he built beaconsfield[the house].the info ive got seems to be well researched, its too much to go i nto great detail here. i suppose even then there were property developers and wheelers and dealers, the greenhoughs were stonemasons , perhaps they only leased the land off joshua lace? maybe the liverpool record office may hold the answers.

thanks Jacko, sounds like you've got an amazing stash of research there (our house deeds are pretty restrictive in what they have to say!), any idea if the society still have copies we could get from them? ...to be honest we've not really looked into the history (no idea where to start!) but it is something I'd love to dig into more, if only to be able to pass the information on with the house - 6yrs in and not wanting to move by any means(fantastic place to live!) but feel that as custodians of somewhere special, it's kind of a duty to keep the hitory alive. So far, nothing we've seen of Gateacre mentions these cottages ( just the ones opposite the shops & Church Cottages!)

Hi Johnkw
Just browsing through previous postings and read your memories of Gateacre Comp. You referred to a Gary North - might you be mistaken with the surname because I know a Gary Broad who married Lynda ( also a former pupil at the comp ) and he went on to become a biology teacher.
Regards, Alan

Hi, Alan:
Yes, you're correct, it was Gary Broad that I was referring too. I'd mis-remembered his (and Ian Philips) name in my first posting, but thought I'd corrected both in a later message. Such is time- it steals years AND accurate memories away!
Were you at Gateacre Comp during the same period? People scattered from there all over the world, it seems, and it certainly is interesting to learn how fellow-pupils fared in later life!
Best wishes,
Johnkw

hi there, if i am not mistaken, they were built in the 1920,s, i actually lived in no19, the one next to the woolton social club, they bought the house and snatched loads of the garden to extend the club, we had a large garden in the sixties, it was our first house.

Hi All, Was'nt there a white lodge at the entrance to Belle vale Park,if so what became of it.I use to be a member of the 5th Childwall scout group, which met in a hall tucked in the corner between the blue cap and the park.I think the lodge was there then this was around 1968.
