Hi Ken thanks for your aknowledgement, I noticed that my email address is on show , how can i get it removed. As you say the traffic in and around the village is very busy, compared to what it was when i first took my girl friend ( wife ) home, i think i was the only car on the road, it was in the early sixties. her mam was made up because she had met a fella with a car, she told her to hang on to me as i must have a few bob, i always did when i paid off a ship, but it didn't last long. I will get the wife to recall some names and characters from her era of living in Lee Park, Ma Guys shop seems to be very well known, they should have made a momument to her were the petrol station is now. thats all for now Ken.... regards Tony

Hi everyone
Been looking at the old photos of buildings in gateacre one in particular the Gateacre institute my father in law Bob McClure as he was known was a lifelong member of the club sadly he passed away 2 years ago aged 84, my husband told me that his dad often talked about it being a library at one time and that is why they always have books in the foyer not sure of the full story but thought it might be interesting
Ken hope you recieved the photos I sent of the demolition of the lee park masionettes
regards Ingrid

Hi Ingrid, Unfortunately I didn't receive the pics - nothing at all, unless they got dumped in the anti-spam!! Could you possibly try again?
Re. the Gateacre Institute - It was the original Church of England school, converted into a reading room in 1877, which later became the Gateacre Institute. So your father-in-law was right. You can read about it in the Local History pages on this website,
Regards, Ken

Hi Lee Parkonions
We moved to Lee Park in 1957, I was 11. We came from everton and moved into 3 Adstone Road. At the bottom of the road it was just rough ground, Lee Park Avenue is there now. My brother and I were delighted to be living in the country after everton. I went to St Marys junior school in Woolton Village. My classroom was St Marys billiard hall! I remember that at the end of Jones Farm Road, were it meets Belle Vale Road there was an old house, like a small lodge, I suppose it was part of the original Lee Park.Ma' Guys on Belle Vale Road was were I was sent on messages, she had fresh plucked chickens in the window. The co-op in the same road smelt of fresh ground coffee. The petrol station were I bought my first car, an Austin A30, and a gallon of petrol was 4/6. I'll finish now, but will sign on again shortly

Hi Gelert, Nice to hear from you. Sounds like they were still building Lee Park when you moved in. That old lodge at the corner of Jones' Farm Road was the Lee Hall Lodge which stood at the entrance to the driveway leading through the park to Lee Hall. It would have been more than 230 years old by now, what a pity they had to pull it all down! I didn't realise it still stood when the estate was being built; but at least you saw it while it still existed.
There used to be a big pond on the land next to the Lee Park Hotel, where they built that sort of sunken area. They must have drained the pond before they built Lee Park Avenue. Look forward to hearing some more from you,
Ken

hi ken, thanks for the location of the pond in lee park, wasnt too sure were it was to be exact, my gt grandfather peter jackson drowned in that pond in march 1863, on his death certificate it said (suicide), he was only 29, and left a wife and five children.Ive often wondered why he did that, but there,s nobody left to tell me.There was an inquest but i dont know how to go about getting any of that information, it was a crime in those days so he wont have been buried in the childwall churchyard, it will have been outside the walls.

Hi Sueozee, I might be able to help a little. There were 3 mansions at the lower end of Cuckoo Lane - "Hillside", "The Slopes", and "Rockfield", all built as country retreats, on the rising ground leading up to Cuckoo Lane. "Rockfield" is first mentioned by name on the 1871 Census as the home of a wine merchant, but the only Davies family I could find appeared on the 1901 Census. That was William Davies, a baker, and his family. But I found Mrs Bessie Davies of "Rockfield" in the 1900 Gore's Directory, so it seems that your family must have been living there between 1891 and 1901. It's not a lot to go on, but I hope it's of some help,
Ken

Hi jacko, That's quite a story about your great-grandfather, it must have been a terrible tragedy. Was he related to the Jacksons of Childwall House Farm (and Jacko's Pond)? I looked in the 1861 Census but I couldn't find him. But I'm sure they have records of inquests at the Local Record Office. If you send them an e-mail at recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction,
Ken

Hey Jacko, I've traced a Peter Jackson in the 1851 & 1841 Census, and his sister, mother, & stepfather in the 1861, 1851 & 1841 Census. I don't know if you've already done this, but if not I'd be happy to give you the details, perhaps in a personal message or e-mail if you prefer. Good luck with the searches,
Ken

Hi Jacko - just read your message of Feb 21st; I too lived in Gateacre in the 1950s and attended the village school. I was also in the maypole "troupe" - perhaps we know each other! I have pictures taken of the lorry in the school yard and then of the dancing during the Rose Queen fete in Belle Vale school - can't remember the year though. I remember Mr Lunt very well; he smacked my hand for talking through a radio broadcast! We lived in Hollytree Road off Halewood Road. I went back to look at the house and village some years ago. Many things are still the same but some are very different. We used to live in the house adjoining Gorsey Cop farm before the Comprehensive was built and my grandmother lived for a time at the stables in Grange Lane and later in a bungalow higher up the lane. My family lived in "The Lodge" at the junction of Grange Lane and Cuckoo Lane until a few years ago when my Great Uncle died and it was sold. I think that's enough reminiscing for now. If I can help anyone with memories of the village, please get in touch.

I have just read through all the memories from Gateacre and Lee Park. What a rush of emotion this caused. I thought I would share a few of my own. The first part of my life I lived in Endbrooke Rd (the pre-fabs) played in the brook and Prickets field, he was also our milkman for years. I went to Joseph Williams C.P. then onto Gateacre Comp. We moved to Fordcombe Road in the early 60's,when they knocked down the pre fabs and built Netherly Estate, one of my freinds lived in Atley House (how many times did the lifts get stuck!) and we use to go for walks on the golf course, Naylors Road and Wood Lane. I use to hang out at Lee Park shops eating fish and chips. St Stephens 'youth club' was another haunt and we use to walk through The Nook to go to Woolton Baths. So many great memorie, so many great friends, were are you now? I moved to South Australia with my family in 1970, and my kids have grown up listening to me talk about my childhood in Gateacre/Lee park. It was a pretty good place. I could go on for another page - but this may start to bore you. Thanks for you memories.

Hello to everyone out there, Sorry it's taken so long to find this site. How amazing is this. I was born in a little house by the Nook and nearly 40yrs later I'm living on the Avenue. I remember the ugly looking maisonettes. Yes those five blocks. Well my father-in-law pressed the button to blow them up. Does anyone remember the concrete jungle that was on Woodlee rd. Wandering around for hours and having such fun.
