I am one of Bill Taylor`s grand daughters. i lived in Gateacre Hall Hotel in early 1970s when my mum and dad was running it on behalf of my grandparents. Just would like to share a bit of history that i was told over the the years and would love to hear any one else stories. One there was a grey lady present and part of the hotel was partitioned off. I was removed as a 4 year old from a smaller bedroom to a large one as builders would not come back into that room or building and refused payment for works. There were tunnels leading directly to Speake Hall some where blocked off, also there were wells i believe, apparently slave trade. Also The Slave Gate at front of building was always Locked and a curse on any one who opened it. apparently some 10 plus years ago it was unlocked with my Grandmothers total disagreement. The builder who unlocked it died very soon after. dont know if gate still there. I live in the south of England and most family have passed away so Liverpool is a long treak but it always in my heart.

I am afraid I can't throw any light on the stories about the Gateacre Hall but I was a good friend of your Dad many years ago.
I will send you a PM to pass my contact details on to your Dad, Billy Jr.

I remember the story of the gate not being unlocked, i moved to lee park in the early 70's, i was there when the hotel was selling everything off before it got demolished. we use to dare one another to go through the nook at the back as well,

Hi all,l believe the slave gate is still there. It was moved to the court yard of the new apartments that were built on the sight. Also the carved beam which was over the bar in the public bar was preserved.I was told that the iron rings in the wall of the court yard of the nook were used to shackle slaves whilst there mastered took refreshment in the hall.In my opinion the two worst things to happen in Gateacre was the building of the nook estate on the allotments and then the demolishing of the hall, ( rant over)

Hello Paul - I remember Gateacre Hall Hotel - also I remember Gordon Catlin who was manager there in about 1960's He was a photographer in Liverpool also - whatever happened to him........
Also I often wonder why it was called Gateacre Hall Hotel - it was'nt Gateacre Hall - as that was at the top of Gateacre Brow right opposite Gateacre Brow - sadly no longer. I think it should be called 'The Nook' as it was where Rev. Wm Shepherd lived and in old documents that was was it was called Unless you know the correct name..... although I think no-one knows really. Joan Borrowscale

Hello I am Gordon Catlins Daughter, my parents owned Gateacre Hall and sold it in 1972 Hi Jenn, did your parents buy Gateacre Hall Hotel off Ben Whitehouse? I believe he bought it in about 1946 and sold it in 1961'ish. Do you have any pictures of the Hotel. I'd love to see them.

I've found some paperwork about a guy (Ben Whitehouse) who bought the hotel about 1946'ish and sold it around 1961. I'd love to know more about it. Ben Whitehouse also took over his Father's Garage (same name) on Scotchbarn Lane, Prescot in 1940 and sold it in 1966.
